10 Mid-Year Goals That Are Better Than Resolutions

I know I’m not the only one who’s written the longest New Year’s resolutions list known to humankind — like, practically a scroll. And the wildest part? Half the stuff on the list was déjà vu from last year… and the year before that. Why does this keep happening? Well, speaking for myself — hi, it’s me — it was always the same old story: excuses. I’d convince myself, “This year will be different! This year, I’ll finally do the thing!” But then… comfort called, and I answered like it was my full-time job. Old habits and cozy routines? Yeah, they don’t go down without a fight. Shifting those takes more than a shiny planner and a motivational quote.

In 2021, I had my second baby — and let’s be real, resolutions were not on my radar. I was pregnant, giving birth, and riding the pandemic rollercoaster while teaching from home. Like many teachers, I suddenly became a Zoom pro overnight and somehow juggled newborn life and remote work until my baby turned five months. Going back in person? Nope, didn’t sit right. I couldn’t imagine leaving my little one at daycare. After a whirlwind of stress, illness, and every red flag you can think of, I jumped into a Network Marketing Business — NMB (New Me, Who Dis?). Spoiler alert: it didn’t exactly go as planned. Turns out, trying to build a business and be a full-time mom and recover from, well… everything, was a lot. I gave it a solid try (shoutout to every caption I wrote while sleep-deprived), but the truth is, I was burnt out and chasing something that didn’t feel fully mine. That’s when I realized — maybe it wasn’t about finding a new path, but building one that actually fit me.

One unexpected gift from my two years in network marketing? Personal development. Honestly, I had no idea what that even meant at first. I thought it was just meditating and saying a few affirmations in the mirror — but it went way deeper. That’s when I discovered the idea of choosing a “word of the year,” and I’ve stuck with it ever since. As a former teacher, I love the structure and intention behind having a yearly theme — it feels way more meaningful than a list of resolutions I’ll forget by February. Through that journey (and a few side hustles), I also realized something big: if I was serious about building a business around me, I had to keep learning about me. Turns out, entrepreneurship starts with self-awareness — who knew?

Over the years, my approach to New Year’s traditions evolved. I swapped out the frantic last-minute resolutions for a more laid-back yet strategic mindset. Instead of stressing out about what I was going to achieve, I started reflecting on what I truly wanted and how I could make it happen—without sacrificing my love for bread.

And so, whether you’re a resolution devotee or a goal-setting guru, here’s the real takeaway: life-changing actions aren’t about perfection. They’re about finding what works for you, celebrating small victories, and maybe even chuckling at the absurdity of it all. So, as we toast to another year, consider this: whether your word is “Intentional,” “Procrastination,” or “I’m still figuring it out,” get ready to embrace the journey—vision board or not, bread, and all!

1. Prioritize Self-Care

Let’s be real—between juggling all the things, self-care tends to quietly slide to the bottom of the to-do list (right next to “organize the junk drawer” and “figure out what that mystery container in the fridge is”). But here’s the thing: there’s absolutely nothing wrong with hitting the reset button mid-year. In fact, I highly recommend it. Think of it like spring cleaning, but for your soul. It’s a chance to pause, take stock, and ask yourself: Am I thriving, surviving, or just vibing?

After you read this, carve out a little time to check in with yourself. How would you rate your self-care lately—honestly? Then, make space for things that actually recharge you. Whether it’s diving into a good book, rolling out the yoga mat, or soaking in a bath until you resemble a raisin, do what fills your cup. Because let’s face it—when you take care of yourself, you’re way better equipped to take care of everything (and everyone) else.

2. Learn a New Skill Each Month

Lean into the challenges, and try to see setbacks as plot twists in your personal growth story. Set a fun goal to learn something new each month—whether it’s a skill, hobby, or random subject you’ve always been curious about. Not only does it expand your brainpower, but it also sets a great example for your kids and students (bonus points if they think you’re cooler because of it).

And hey, if making some extra cash is also on your radar, learning money-making skills is a smart way to start. Think freelance writing, web development, digital products, content creation, or even stock photography—just to name a few. Honestly, I didn’t even consider this path until I started my first side hustle. That tiny spark turned into a full-on fire to keep learning, exploring, and figuring out what lights me up and maybe pays a bill or two. You never know where one little “why not?” might lead.

3. Foster Stronger Relationships

Whether it’s spending more quality time with family or reconnecting with old friends, nurturing relationships is essential. Aim to schedule regular family game nights or coffee dates with friends. These moments strengthen bonds and create lasting memories.

4. Focus on Financial Wellness

Let’s talk money goals—but make it values-based. Think: saving for a family adventure, investing in that course you’ve been eyeing, or finally launching that side hustle idea that’s been living rent-free in your brain. Financial empowerment isn’t about being perfect with money; it’s about feeling in control and creating stability for the people you love. (And hey, remember Goal #2? Look at you, knocking out two birds with one stone. Woot woot!)

Now, full transparency: I’m not the CFO of my household—that title goes to someone else—but I am a big fan of setting financial goals every year. What really helps? A good ol’ budget template. Sitting down to map things out (and actually checking in once in a while) can make a huge difference in your family’s financial peace of mind. 5. Engage in Community Service

Giving back to the community can be incredibly fulfilling. Choose a cause that resonates with you and commit to volunteering regularly. Involving your children or students in community service fosters empathy and a sense of responsibility.

6. Enhance Your Professional Skills

For educators and professionals, continuous learning is vital. Set a goal to attend workshops, webinars, or courses that enhance your teaching methods or career prospects. This commitment not only benefits you but also enriches the learning experience of those you guide.

 7. Create a Mindfulness Routine

In a fast-paced world, mindfulness can help ground you. Develop a daily or weekly routine that incorporates meditation, journaling, or simply taking time to reflect. This practice can improve your mental clarity and emotional resilience. A daily gratitude journal is a great way to start.

8. Encourage Family Health and Fitness

Make health a family affair by setting collective goals, like trying new recipes or participating in outdoor activities together. This not only promotes physical well-being but also strengthens family bonds through shared experiences. Set up a calendar with family activities. This is the link to my favorite family calendar

9. Embrace Digital Detox

In a technology-driven era, setting boundaries around screen time is essential. Aim for a digital detox day each week, where you unplug and engage in real-world activities. This can lead to improved focus, creativity, and overall well-being.

10. Set Intentions and Visualize Success

Take time to articulate your intentions for the year. Create a vision board that reflects your goals and desires. Visualization can be a powerful motivator, helping you stay focused and inspired throughout the year.

As you embark on the journey of 2025, remember that setting goals is a personal and dynamic process. Embrace flexibility and allow your aspirations to evolve as the year progresses.
